Consistency: Building a Steady Walk with God — Part 1

Many believers sincerely love God and want to follow him faithfully. They pray, worship, serve and seek to live according to his Word. Yet even with that genuine desire, their relationship and walk with God can feel close one week and distant the next. A season of clarity is followed by confusion, a strong commitment by withdrawal, and a season of boldness by fear and hesitation.

If that sounds familiar, you may have noticed how circumstances and emotions can affect our walk with God. We may feel confident in our faith one day, then face something that leaves us struggling the next. What happens around us and how we feel can change quickly, affecting how we relate to God and live out our faith, even when our desire to follow him remains. A steady walk with God needs a foundation that can hold through those changes.

That is why consistency matters.

Consistency is the quality of remaining steady and dependable over time. In our walk with God, it means continuing to turn towards him, trust him and live according to his Word through both good and difficult seasons. It shapes how we respond, the choices we make and whether we continue in the direction we have committed to when we got saved.

That does not mean we never struggle, doubt or have difficult days. Nor does it mean we will have the same energy for prayer, worship or service in every season. There will be times when we feel weary, need support or have to adjust what we can manage. Consistency is choosing to turn towards God in those seasons rather than away from him, bringing our questions, doubts and worries, and allowing him to guide our next steps.

Scripture uses the language of steadfastness, endurance and rootedness to describe consistency in our walk with God. Paul encourages believers to be “rooted and built up in Christ” (Colossians 2:7). Hebrews calls us to run “with endurance the race that is set before us” (Hebrews 12:1). Psalm 1 pictures a person planted like a tree beside streams of water.

These passages do not describe someone who never faces pressure. They describe someone who remains rooted when pressure comes. A tree can bend in the wind without being uprooted. It bears fruit in its season, drawing from a source that continues to sustain it.

In the same way, consistency does not mean every season of our walk with God will look the same. It means continuing to draw close to him through each one. We see it when we seek God through delay or disappointment, and when we continue to seek him in seasons of success and ease.

Difficulties may tempt us to withdraw; good times may tempt us to rely on ourselves. Consistency does not require us to pretend we are somewhere we are not. Nothing is hidden from God (Hebrews 4:13). We are invited to approach him for mercy and grace when things do not feel the same anymore (Hebrews 4:16).

A steady walk with God is formed through these repeated choices to remain close to him. Each season may ask something different of us, but consistency means that, through them all, we remain rooted in him.
