Covenant: More Than a Promise

“ I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.” — Genesis 17:7

What is Covenant?

A covenant is a sacred agreement that establishes a committed relationship between two parties.

In this verse, we see God establishing a covenant with Abraham. God promised to be not only Abraham’s God, but also the God of his descendants — not just to be their God, but to bless them and walk with them.

Throughout Scripture, we see God relating to people through covenants.
For example:

  • With Noah, God made a covenant never to destroy the earth by flood again (Genesis 9:11)
  • With Moses and the Israelites, God established a covenant to guide and set them apart as his people (Exodus 19:5–6)

A covenant is therefore more than a promise. It is a binding relationship built on trust, commitment, and faithfulness.

It is not based on feelings or convenience, but on a decision to remain committed and connected.

 Understanding Covenant

Understanding covenant helps us recognise that our relationship with God is not casual.

It is:

  • intentional
  • relational
  • ongoing

It reflects a commitment — not just from God to us, but an invitation for us to walk with him in return.

“Walk before me faithfully…” —Genesis 17:1

 Reflection

Do I understand my relationship with God as a covenant — or something I simply move in and out of depending on how I feel?
