Spiritual Stamina

“Enlarge the place of your tent, stretch your tent curtains wide, do not hold back; lengthen your cords, strengthen your stakes.” – Isaiah 54:2

Spiritual stamina is the inner strength that enables us to endure trials, remain steadfast in our faith, and carry the weight of God’s assignments. It is the sustained resilience to keep praying, believing, and serving even when the journey is difficult.

Think of the contrast between a flexible cable and an armoured cable. A flexible cable is lightweight, easy to handle, but has a limited capacity and is vulnerable to wear and tear. An armoured cable, on the other hand, is designed for strength and endurance, with an added layer of protection against pressure, moisture, and external damage. Our spiritual lives mirror this reality. If our faith is fragile, our prayers shallow, or our endurance short, we may not be able to withstand life’s challenges or steward God’s calling upon us in a sustainable way.

In His wisdom, God sometimes delays or withholds blessings or assignments—not because He is unwilling, but because He is preparing us to handle them well. The parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14–30) shows this principle in action. Two servants multiplied what they were entrusted with and were rewarded with more, but the servant who buried his gift lost even what he had. Stamina, faith, and courage expand our capacity, while fear and complacency shrink it. Just as a child must grow before taking on adult responsibilities, so believers must mature before carrying greater assignments. As Jesus said: “For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” – (Matthew 7:14).

This truth is echoed in the prayer of Jabez: “Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory!” (1 Chronicles 4:10). Jabez was not only asking for blessing, but for capacity —the ability to carry what God might give. Jesus also revealed the need for endurance in Gethsemane, asking His disciples, “Couldn’t you keep watch with me for one hour?” (Matthew 26:40). Their failure to remain awake showed the struggle to sustain spiritual stamina in a critical moment.

The Apostle Paul reminds us to put on the full armour of God, so that we can effectively take our stand against the devil’s schemes. (Ephesians 6:11).

Prayer

Lord, enlarge my capacity to receive, sustain, and steward the blessings and responsibilities You have prepared for me. Teach me endurance in prayer, faith in trials, and wisdom in preparation. May I be equipped to carry all that You desire to pour into my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen
