In 2 Corinthians 5:20, Paul wrote, “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.”
An ambassador is an official appointed by a government, president, or king to live and serve in a foreign land, representing the values and interests of their homeland while maintaining good diplomatic relations. Ambassadors are carefully chosen for their integrity, wisdom, and ability to faithfully convey the intentions of their nation. When a country sends an ambassador abroad, that person carries both authority and responsibility vested in them. They speak with the voice of their nation, conveying its policies and priorities rather than their own opinion. Their conduct reflects directly on the nation they represent, shaping how others perceive it. Ambassadors are, therefore, people of integrity, careful thought, and unwavering commitment to their nation.
What That Means For Us
As believers, we are heaven’s ambassadors on earth. Though we live in this world, our true citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20). This means our lives should reflect the character, culture, and values of God’s kingdom, not the patterns of this world. Just as a nation’s ambassador cannot act on personal preference or opinion, we are called to speak and act in alignment with God’s heart, values and truth.
God has entrusted us with a sacred assignment: to carry his message of reconciliation to a broken and divided world. Every believer is an ambassador of this hope. As Jesus said in John 15:16, we have been chosen and appointed to bear fruit. Being an ambassador is therefore not a title of honour alone but a daily responsibility to live in such a way that our words, attitudes, and actions point others toward Jesus. It means representing heaven’s priorities in earthly spaces: showing mercy where there is judgment, speaking truth where there is confusion, and extending grace where there is pain.
Although 2 Corinthians 5:20 is the only verse that explicitly calls us Christ’s ambassadors, the theme of representing God runs throughout Scripture. In John 20:21, Jesus commissions his followers, saying that as the father sent him, he is now sending them. Like ambassadors sent to represent their country, we are sent to continue Christ’s mission here on earth.
In Ephesians 6:19–20, Paul describes his own understanding of this calling, praying for boldness to declare the gospel fearlessly, for which he calls himself “an ambassador in chains.” Matthew 5:14–16 adds that we are the light of the world, called to let our light shine so others may see the goodness of God and glorify him. Colossians 3:17 and 23 instructs us that in everything we do, whether in word or deed we are to do it in the name of the Lord Jesus, and work at it as if for the Lord not human masters.
Scripture consistently reminds us that we are called to represent Christ on earth. Galatians 2:20 teaches us, we have died to self so that Christ may live in us. Every action, every word, and every act of service should reflect his love and heart to the world. Wherever we serve, in whatever capacity, we are standing as God’s representatives.
What a profound privilege it is to represent the King of kings. When we step into our places of service, whether greeting someone at church with a warm smile, praying with a friend who is discouraged, comforting a grieving family, or offering practical help to a neighbour in need, we embody the compassion of Christ.
The same is true when we teach children in Sunday school, visit the sick, lead a Bible study, mentor a younger believer, or extend forgiveness in a strained relationship. In our workplaces, we represent Christ by working with excellence, showing respect, and upholding honesty when others may compromise. In our families, we model patience, gentleness, and sacrificial love.
When we volunteer in the community, give time to the lonely, encourage someone struggling in their faith, or quietly intercede for those who are far from God, we are revealing the goodness of God to them through ordinary acts of obedience. Wherever there is tension, we bring peace; wherever there is hurt, we bring healing; wherever there is darkness, we bring light. Every word spoken in kindness, every hand extended in help, and every prayer whispered in faith becomes a reflection of the One who sends us.
Sometimes we may never see the full impact of what we do. Our service may go unnoticed or unacknowledged by others, yet God sees and remembers. What we often consider small or insignificant might be someone’s last chance to turn to God, especially those who have been disappointed, wounded, or overlooked elsewhere. Some people arrive at church carrying deep pain, silently deciding that if no one speaks to them within the first ten minutes, they will walk away not only from that church but perhaps from God himself. I have heard many such stories—people who were on the verge of giving up, ready to slip away unseen, until a kind word, a smile, or a simple conversation changed everything.
A small act of welcome can disarm years of rejection. A gentle touch on the shoulder, a sincere word of encouragement, or a listening ear can remind a hurting soul that they are seen, valued, and loved. This is the power of representing Christ. As his ambassadors, we carry the ministry of healing broken hearts and restoring lost souls. In a world where many feel invisible, we have the sacred privilege of helping people feel seen and reminding them that they matter.
In a sea of crowds, especially in large or busy churches, one genuine encounter can bridge the distance between despair and hope, between isolation and faith renewed. Through us, God’s love reaches into the deepest wounds of humanity, offering comfort, belonging, and the assurance that He has not forgotten them.
Every interaction carries eternal significance. We may not realise who is watching, listening, or quietly searching for a sign that God still cares. A simple act of kindness could give someone the courage to stay when they were ready to walk away. A word of compassion could reopen a heart that was closed. That is why, as Christ’s ambassadors, we must walk through our days with spiritual awareness, whether in the church, at home, in the workplace, or within our communities. Every conversation, every act of service, and every gesture of love carries the power to reveal God’s heart to someone and become the bridge that draws them closer to heaven.
Takeaway Activity
- Take some time to learn more about the role of an ambassador. Take note of their duties, how they conduct themselves, and how carefully they represent their nation’s interests.
- Reflect on the parallels with your role as Christ’s ambassador. Consider how your words, actions, and choices can convey God’s heart and character to those around you.
Prayer
Lord, thank you for choosing us to represent you here on earth. Help us to serve with grace, humility, and excellence. May our words and actions reflect your heart and draw others closer to you. Strengthen us as your ambassadors to carry heaven’s love into every place we go. May our presence be a testimony of your goodness, and may every interaction open a door for others to encounter you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
